Nahid Urges Media to Combat Misinformation, Promote Courageous Reporting
At a meeting with editors of daily newspapers on Tuesday, November 12, held at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Advisor Md. Nahid Islam emphasized that there is no government pressure on the media. He encouraged the press to leverage this freedom by delivering brave and objective journalism.
Highlighting the importance of open information flow, the advisor noted that the lack of accurate information often leads to public confusion by rumors and misinformation. He urged the media to take a proactive role in combating these issues.
Discussing the role of the media in anti-discrimination movements, he emphasized the importance of honoring the sacrifices of those who were injured or martyred in protests and suggested that the press play a responsible role in preserving their memory in public consciousness.
Criticizing previous authoritarian governments, he acknowledged that during that era, many journalists could not report the truth due to fear. He called on journalists to now openly report any past injustices, corruption, or abuses. Advisor Islam welcomed constructive criticism of the current interim government, reiterating its commitment to press freedom and emphasizing the media's critical role in delivering accurate information to the public. He also announced that a commission has been formed to work on reforms to the media landscape, with changes to be implemented based on the commission’s recommendations.
The editors in attendance praised the current lack of government interference in media operations, viewing it as a positive step for independent journalism. They noted that media plays a vital role in establishing good governance and expressed support for a separate policy framework for English-language newspapers.
Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Mahbuba Farzana, Director General of the Department of Film and Publications Abul Kalam Mohammad Shamsuddin, Managing Director of the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust Muhammad Abdullah, and other newspaper editors and representatives were also present at the meeting.
